Wall Family Photograph Album
Abstract
Photograph album kept by the Wall Family who resided in Spearfish, South Dakota. The photographs depict many scenes in the Black Hills area.

Biographical / Historical
William J. "Billy" Wall was born in 1869 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He came to the Black Hills with his family in 1889, eventually settling at Spearfish, South Dakota, where he opened a barber shop, working out of a cow shed, and later had a shop in the Spearfish Hotel, then Kelly's Motor Inn, followed by two other Spearfish locations.
He married Lena Marie Langholff on August 3, 1895, in Spearfish. She was born at Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin in 1875 and came to the Black Hills at the age of 15 with her parents. They lived on a farm outside of Spearfish.
Billy and Lena had four children: George Michael Wall (1897-1976), Hazel Elizabeth Wall Waters (1899-1980), William James Wall Jr. (1901-1977), and Verna Catherine Wall Drilling (1913-2006).
William died on May 27, 1949. Lena died December 8, 1950.
Hazel Waters was born on August 19, 1899 in Spearfish, where she went on to graduate from Spearfish Normal School. She worked at the Spearfish telephone office before marrying George A. Waters on October 18, 1922. She died on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1980.
