History of Organization

Since its inception in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, the Society of American Foresters has provided an extensive network of information to better prepare natural resource professionals for the inherent challenges and changes of resource management. Although little is known of the history of the SAF in South Dakota, it's primary objectives remain static throughout statutory affiliation; that of furthering the science, knowledge, skills and conservation ethic of it's members.

The South Dakota SAF appears to have its roots in Brookings, South Dakota, as the location of the regional office. Former prominent members of the South Dakota Society of American Foresters include Richard Homan, Stewart West, and Peter Schaefer.
