Summary

This collection consists of the contents for four notebooks containing correspondence (original and carbon copies), newspaper clippings, and other information related to Herbert L. Case, Mary E. Case, and their children and families. Two of the Case children, Francis Higbee Case and Leland Davidson Case, had public careers as a politician and a magazine editor, respectively. There is also information related to Herbert Case’s affiliation with the Methodist Church and Upper Iowa University.

Biographical Note

Herbert Llywellyn Case (1871-1956) was a Methodist minister who studied at Upper Iowa University. He married Mary Ellen Grannis Case (1868-1959) in 1894. They had five children: Joyce Case Wilson (1895-1982), Francis Higbee Case (1896-1962), Leland Davidson Case (1900-1986), Caroline “Carol” Case Goddard (1903-1998), and Josephine Esther Case Sunderman (1907-1996). Herbert and Mary’s two sons went on to have public careers. Francis Case was a member of the U.S. Congress representing South Dakota, serving in the House from 1937 to 1951 and in the Senate from 1951 until his death in 1962. Leland D. Case was a journalist and editor of the Rotarian. He also co-founded the Westerners.
