Biographical Note
Lawrence Country gets its name from its first county treasurer, Colonel John Lawrence (1839-1889). The county is located on the western border of South Dakota with the county seat located in Deadwood. Lawrence County was officially organized in April 1877, and with Butte County and Pennington County becoming official, Lawrence County became the smallest in the Black Hills. Even though it became the smallest, it was considered the most important with containing one-half of the population and wealth in the Black Hills. The county seat was originally supposed to be in Crook City, but it later got moved to Deadwood making it a permanent home there.
