Biographical Note
Dr. Paul Arthur Haivala was born in Buffalo, S.D. on June 28, 1933. His parents were Gus John and Muriel (Norton) Haivala. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1951. He then served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On April 28, 1956 he married Cecilia Immenoser in Neckarsulm, Germany.
In 1959, he graduated from Black Hills Teachers College (now Black Hills State University). He then became a teacher and coach at Belle Fourche (S.D.) Junior High School. He completed his Master's degree in Education at Black Hills State College (now Black Hills State University) in 1964 and joined the faculty. In 1965, he married Carol J. Kjelsrud. He completed his doctorate from the University of North Dakota in 1975.
At Black Hills State he taught History and served on many committees. He was one of the main organizers of the Black Hills History Conference. In 1983 he wrote the history of Black Hills State titled, The Friendly College: The First 100 Years of Black Hills State. In the Spring of 1991 he received the Distinguished Faculty Award from his peers at Black Hills State.
After a lengthy illness he died August 6, 1991 and is buried at Black Hills National Cemetery.
