Biographical Note
The Foothills Extension Club was organized Feb.9, 1941 at Dorothy Riggs' home. Charter members were Elora Yanzick, Etta Christensen, Lenora Brewer, Edna Dodds, Clara Salem, Iva Trebelcock, Pearl Toffelmire, Dorothy Riggs and Dakota Hepler. In the early years, raised money for the Red Cross with a city hall box social and helped ten families put-up sanitary outhouses. For many years meetings, public service, participation in fairs and other events occupied the members. Charities such as hospitals were helped by donations for materials such as sheets. An annual box was sent to the Yankton State Hospital. The project for 1951 was installing electric lights and cleaning-up the old school house to make it available for community gatherings. The club held a tea in observance of National Home Demonstration Week for many years. The club participated for many years in the Butte-Lawrence County Fair with a booth and sponsoring awards. The club has helped the community through Artemis House donations (to aid battered women and children) and the county fundraiser Tour of Homes project. In recent years, the club has done a High Tea and tables to raise funds for the county scholarship. The club continues to meet (2007) for social and civic activities and helps older members gain information on medical matters such as Medicare, drug plans, and diabetes.
