Biographical Note

Clarence Dougherty was born in 1876 and grew up on a plantation in Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1898, he joined the Army. In his 45 years of service, Dougherty met legendary Indian chiefs in Oklahoman, served on the frontlines in World War I, and spent his final years teaching military science and tactics. At the age of 83, he attended the University of Mexico to learn Spanish, history and archeology. He finally retired in Ft. Bragg, N.C. Dougherty had married in Spearfish in 1905 and had two daughters.
