Scope and Contents

This collection consists of Freeman's research for his book, High Plains Horticulture: A History, Black Hills Forestry: A History, and Persistent Progressives. Topics included are recreation use, timber harvesting, mining and Homestake, grazing, tourism as an income, a brief history of the early Black Hills, and some of the most recent issues of wildfires and mountain pine beetles that all revolve around the Black Hills. Forestry icons such as Gifford Pinchot and Seth Bullock are mentioned in the collection along with other lists of other Forest Reserve supervisors of the Black Hills. Starting from the early exploration of the Black Hills by General George Armstrong Custer to the most recent battles with the Pine beetles, this collection covers a vast and detailed history of the Black Hills forest reserve.
