Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection consists of two diaries. One belonged to Louis's mother and the other to her grandmother. The diary of Louisa Summerville Dunbar Hagman (Louisa grandmother) starts with a note of her birth in 1812 and continues until her death in 1883. She tells of life growing up in the south and during the civil war. The second diary by Calvina Chambliss Anthony (Louisa's mother). It begins with her personal reflections about her early live and the Civil War. From there it picks up in 1868 and continues until 1895. The collection includes scans and transcripts of the diaries as well as some photographs and textual information on the Driskill Family Spearfish residences. Due to the fragile nature of the original diary, and to arrest any further deterioration, only transcripts of the diary will be made available for public use. There are also files containing photographs and assorted printed material about each of the Driskill Family homes in Spearfish.
