Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two photograph albums, created by Robert C. Hull for Lura Elwood, documenting the lives of Spearfish Normal School students. Also included are views of Spearfish, Lead, and Spearfish Canyon.

Biographical / Historical

Lura Beatrice Elwood Hughes (July 8, 1889 - January 2, 1991) was a student at Spearfish Normal School, graduating as a member of the class of 1909. After receiving her teaching degree, she move to Washington, where she taught for 8 years at White Salmon. She then moved to Anchorage, Alaska, to be near her sister and brother-in-law. She taught there for 2 years and met her future husband, Edwin Hughes, an Episcopal minister. They married in 1919 when she was 32. They raised 4 children and had 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. They left Alaska, ultimately ending up in Oregon. She lived to be 101 years old.

Robert C. Hull (November 19, 1886 - December 19, 1946) attended Spearfish Normal School through at least 1907. He later graduated from Northwestern University's dental school in 1911. Hull's family lived in Spearfish for several years. Hull opened a dental office in Great Fall, Montana, after graduating. He married Anna C. Cajori on December 23, 1911. They had a son and a daughter and 5 grandchildren.
