Organizational History

Founded in 1897, the National League of American Pen Women, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that supports and promotes professional women in arts, letters, music, and allied professions. The Black Hills Branch was established by a group of five arts and artists on January 20, 1962. The branch received its charter from the national organization on March 3, 1962; it was the second branch of the organization in South Dakota. Charter members were Helen Morganiti (president), Eleanor A. Wright (vice president), Mildred Fielder (secretary), LaVaughn Storsve (treasurer), and Marjorie Yates Price (auditor). Over the years the group hosted workshops, teas, art shows, and competitions to support the interests and careers of its members. The branch was disbanded after 54 years on April 4, 2016.
