Biographical Note
Mattie Welch (née Gibson) was an 1896 graduate of Spearfish Normal School. She was a teacher, writer, and artist in Spearfish, South Dakota. Her parents were pioneers and the family came to Spearfish in 1882. Mattie's father was Hugh Herron Gibson (1852-1914), who worked in the local mills and served on the school board. Her mother was Augustine McFadden Gibson (1857-1945). Mattie married Edward Welch on August 6, 1907, and they moved to San Diego, California, in about 1915.
