Biographical Note
The Spearfish Women´s Club was organized in 1907, joined the Black Hills Federation of Women´s Clubs in 1907, the South Dakota Federation of Women´s Clubs in 1908, and the General Federation of Women´s Clubs in 1913. According to annual programs printed by the club, the aim of the club was “To strive to touch and to know the great common woman´s heart of us all and never to forget to be kind.” Monthly and sometimes semimonthly meetings were held September through May during which the women had refreshments, discussed projects and other business, and were provided with entertainment in the form of speakers and presentations on topics such as art, politics, poetry, and travel. The club also performed various community service projects. According to club minutes, the Spearfish Women´s Club was disbanded in November 1993 “due to illness of members and husbands, and age of members.” All of the remaining funds were donated to the Grace Balloch Memorial Library of Spearfish.
