Biographical Note

Beta Sigma Phi is a non-academic sorority created to provide social and cultural opportunities for women. It is primarily a social organization, but some chapters do community service work. In 1931, Walter W. Ross founded the organization in Abilene, Kansas. Beta Sigma Phi was incorporated in April 1932 under a charter in Missouri. Founders Day is celebrated on April 30th. Beta Sigma Phi, Rho Chapter was founded in Spearfish, South Dakota October 27, 1941. Lucille McFall was elected the first president of the chapter. Membership in each chapter is limited to 25 members. If interest extends well beyond this number, new chapters may be formed. There is no information on the founding of the Laureate Delta, Alpha Nu, Epsilon Preceptor, or Xi Theta chapters in this collection.
