History of Organization
The Western Slope Extension Club was organized at the home of Mrs. Ralph Gordon on May 12, 1949. In attendance was Home Agent, Mrs. Ina B. Hanson, to help with the initial meeting. The organization started late, but was able to catch up with the 1948-49 foods, clothing, and child development lessons. In the fall, the group began its first official year. The organization adopted the name “Western Slope” because most members lived on the sloping foothills located west of Spearfish. The Western Slope Extension Club donated food, clothing, and toys to a local family in need. Also, the group sponsored a 4-H Club and a community project that used the Wells District schoolhouse for club activities. The organization celebrated its 40th anniversary on June 26, 1989 and voted to dissolve as an extension club in September of 1989. However, the group decided to continue as a social club.
