Biographical Note

Lawrence Country gets its name from its first county treasurer, Colonel John Lawrence (1839-1889). The county is located on the western border of South Dakota with County Seat located in historic Deadwood. The cities located within Lawrence County are Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish, Whitewood and St. Onge. Lawrence County was officially organized in April 1877, and with Butte County and Pennington County becoming official, Lawrence County became the smallest in the Black Hills. Even though it became the smallest, it was considered the most important with containing one-half of the population and wealth in the Black Hills. The County Seat was originally supposed to be in Crook City, but it later got moved to Deadwood making it a permanent home there. Many events have happened in Lawrence County with it becoming the home to the Homestake Gold Mine, and once becoming the largest town in South Dakota, to having many historical figures settling in various towns or just passing on through.
