Biographical Note

Herbert Llywellyn Case was a Methodist minister in Iowa and married Mary Ellen Grannis Case at her father's farm in Vernon, MN. Rev. Case and his family moved every few years in Iowa due to his church work. There were five children. Joyce was born in 1895 in Renwick, Francis was born in 1896 in Everly, Leland was born in 1900 in Wesley, Carolyn was born in 1903 in Swaledale, and Esther was born in 1907 in Marathon. Rev. Herbert Case answered a call from the Methodist Episcopal Church to move from Marathon, Iowa to the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1909. He served as a minister in Sturgis. While there, Carrie A. Nation preached at his church on one occasion on temperance. To be closer to his congregation, Rev. Case and family lived for a while near Bear Butte. In 1912, Rev. Case answered a new call and became Superintendent of the Cheyenne River District of the Dakota Conference of the Methodist Church. Rev. Case had his headquarters in Philip and sent his family to live in Mitchell. Rev. Case traveled many miles to establish small Methodist Churches in his area. In 1913, Rev. Case and his family moved together to live in Hot Springs, SD where he served as a minister.

In 1917, Herbert Case became financial agent for Deaconess Hospital in Rapid City, SD. Case later worked for many years as an insurance agent in Mankato, MN. Rev. Case's son Francis served as a Congressman and as a Senator from South Dakota. Rev. Case's son Leland worked as a journalist for many years and helped establish the Leland D.
