Biographical Note

During his inauguration in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson proposed a slate of legislation which became to be known as his "War on Poverty". The establishment of the Job Corps became the center piece of this war. The first head of the Office of Economic Opportunity, Sargent Shriver, modeled the Job Corps on the Civilian Conservation Corps from the 1930s. The purpose of the Job Corps was to educate and train young men, ages 16-21 so that they would have marketable skills and become more productive citizens. The Job Corps Box Elder Camp was established near Nemo, S.D. in 1965. It officially opened on December 6th and the first corpsmen arrived two days later on December 8th. This camp was established on the site of a former CCC camp. Beatrice Mary Truax was a teacher at the camp from 1968-1968.
